Could you introduce yourself and share your field of study at the university?
Assalamualaikum Wr. Wb. My name is Rochman Taufiqqur Singgih. I am from Surabaya State University, class of 2022. I am 32 years old, majoring in Special Education, and I am also an athlete under the auspices of the province of East Java.
Could you describe your limitations?
I have a physical disability I have cerebral palsy, which is caused by nerve damage in the brain. This causes spasms and muscle disorders.
What inspired you to pursue this field of study?
For this reason, I entered this field of study because I wanted to deepen my knowledge about children with disabilities, especially those in inclusive schools and special needs schools. There should also be the same learning. The only difference between inclusive schools and special needs schools is usually in the learning process — especially in inclusive schools, it is more about being treated the same or being differentiated from others. But for disabilities in special needs schools, the curriculum must be modified.
Can you describe your experience studying at the university as a person with a Disability?
As a student with a disability, I volunteered to teach at a special needs school in Singapore. I held a position in the learning department, teaching at the special needs school. There, we gained valuable experience and it was also helpful, with good coordination with others.
Can you share a positive moment when you felt genuinely supported or included?
I was there with my friends during the lessons. During those lessons, my friends often gave me a little input and also appreciation, so it was easy for me to participate in what is known as the programme for students with disabilities.
Could you share your biggest achievement, and why?
My greatest achievement was in 2016 when I won third place nationally. I also won first and second place at the provincial level. In 2021 and 2022, I won first and second place at the provincial level. In 2024, I also won first place at the provincial level. In 2016, I competed in CP (Cerebral Palsy) football. In 2019, I competed in athletics, and I have continued to compete in athletics until 2024.
What personal strengths or strategies help you navigate challenges in university life?
As for my own strategy when facing difficulties or when I am feeling down I usually go running. Of course, this exercise helps me relieve some of the boredom of facing these demanding lectures.
Who or what has played the biggest role in supporting your journey?
The role of parents must be prioritised, because parents support whole heartedly not half-heartedly. Without my parents’ support, I might not have come this far.
What changes would make universities more accessible and inclusive for disabled individuals?
Of course, accessibility is important for people with disabilities. For example, roads for people with disabilities, boards for the blind, and escalators must be provided for people with disabilities. That is what accessibility for people with disabilities truly means.
What advice would you give to other disabled students entering higher education?
Of course, don’t be shy or give up easily, because there are results behind the process. Nothing about the process itself is instant.
