Who Are We?
Sahabat-ID is a research project between Cardiff University (UK), Universitas Katolik Widya Mandala Surabaya (Indonesia) and Edinburgh Napier (UK), and funded by the British Council through the Going Global Partnership Programme. It combines the social model of disability and art-based storytelling to explore the lived experience of disabled students and staff in Indonesia’s higher education.
The project teams involve students, educators, and advocates with and without disabilities who share one vision: to transform higher education into a more inclusive, equitable and empowering space for disabled persons.
Our Approach
- Step 1: Identifying Barriers : Collaborating with students and staff to map intersectional psycho social, emotional, and socio-economic barriers in research and higher education.
- Step 2: Amplifying Voices : Using art-based storytelling and visual narratives to provide evidence of lived realities.
- Step 3: Driving Change : Co-producing practical toolkits training programs and workshops that empower individuals and drive systemic institusional reform.
Our Team
Dr Zoe Lee is a Reader (Associate Professor) in Marketing at Cardiff Business School, Cardiff University, and the project lead.
She is interested in inclusive and responsible branding, especially disability representation and ethical uses of AI. Her work looks at how brands can drive social change through more inclusive and sustainable communication. This research supports the Disability Inclusion Project by helping organisations better represent disabled people, challenge stigma, and create fairer, more accessible practices. She is also a management board member of EMPOWER, supporting women in academia. This understanding is important for making education equal, accessible and inclusive for everyone.
Dr F.V. Lanny Hartanti is passionate about creating a higher education environment where every student and staff member, regardless of ability, can belong and thrive. As Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs, Alumni, Innovation, and Business at Universitas Katolik Widya Mandala Surabaya (UKWMS), she has been at the forefront of the university’s journey towards becoming a disability-inclusive campus. Her advocacy began as a small initiative and grew into the establishment of the UKWMS Disability Support Unit, which she founded and led until August 2025. Working with partners such as the National Commission on Disabilities, Kedaibilitas, and Autism Awareness Indonesia, Dr Hartanti has helped develop inclusive pathways, staff training, and student support. With over 20 years of academic and leadership experience, she believes inclusion is not only about access, it is about culture of empathy, collaboration and empowerment in every corner of the campus.
